You will need to contact the registry office with your intention to marry – an M10 form in Scotland- and this needs to be done at least 29 days before your marriage date. Also, a witness details form is required.

You will also need originals of:

• birth certificates
• proof of address for both applicants
• passports (if born after 01/01/1983)

If you have been married or in a civil partnership before, you must submit proof this has ended by providing the original of:

• divorce decree/dissolution of civil partnership
• or a death certificate of your former spouse or civil partner
• or a completed divorce questionnaire if divorce granted in a country outwith the UK.

The type of ceremony you require from the registry office is a Statutory Wedding Ceremony. This is a no-frills legal union to sign paperwork before two witnesses. When you take your paperwork in for the M10 ask about this and say you are having a celebrant led ceremony by a non-affiliated celebrant. You therefore only require the Statutory Wedding Ceremony.
